In italiano non c’è una parola che traduce esattamente questa azione: vuole dire andare per mercatini, garage sales (altra cosa che credo in Italia non esiste, ma che consiste nel fare un mercatino delle proprie cose per liberare un po’ casa o in vista di un trasloco) e comprare cose usate.
In Italian there isn’t a word that translate this action: it means to go to flea markets, garage sales (another thing that doesn’t really exist in Italy) and buy second-hand things.

In realtà l’aggettivo thrift vuole dire frugale e in effetti comprare di seconda mano dovrebbe dare un risparmio. Questo purtroppo non è molto vero in Italia dove manca un po’ la cultura del riutilizzo delle cose dismesse dagli altri. Negli Stati Uniti, ma anche in Israele, dove quando la gente butta un divano lo mette per strada in attesa del camion della nettezza urbana, ci sono case intere arredate con i resti buttati da altri.
Thrifty means frugal and buying second hand should be cheaper. This is not completely true in Italy where we are not that used to buy used stuff. In the States and in Israel, where people throw away stuff in the streets waiting for the garbage truck, there are houses completely furnished with other people’s garbage!

Per dare un po’ di calore alla nostra casina, dove per anni non sono entrati soprammobili di nessun genere, Matteo ed io il sabato visitiamo volentieri il Balon, mercato delle pulci e dell’antiquariato di Torino. Non è molto economico, ma abbiamo trovato cose davvero belline.
For many years no knick-knacks were allowed in Casa Cohen, so to make our home warmer, on saturdays Matteo and I take a stroll to the Balon, the local flea and antiques market. It’s notnvery cheap but we found some nice things.

Certo siamo lontani dai bottini che fanno le nostre amiche americane o nord-europee che si portano a casa tutto quello che ho citato con 10 dollari, ma noi ci divertiamo molto a scovare questi piccoli tesori…
It’s far from the pickings of our American or North-European friends find (I think they woould have paid 10 dollors maximum for all the things I mentioned), but we are having a lor of fun finding those little hidden treasures…
